Surrey fire engulfs garage full of cars

A garage full of vehicles went up in flames overnight in Surrey.

Assistant chief of operations at the Surrey Fire Service Mike McNamara tells 1130 NewsRadio that when crews got to the fire on 176th Street, the structure was fully engulfed.

“It appeared on the inside, there were a few vehicles. It was either an auto body-type shop or somebody storing vehicles,” McNamara shared.

The assistant chief explains that as of about 6 a.m., crews were still on scene putting out hot spots.

“When firefighters responded, they surrounded the building, and made sure they protected any exposures so the fire didn’t spread and just contained the fire to where it was,” McNamara added.

While he’s unsure what kind of cars were in the building, McNamara says it’s likely they were all damaged.

There are no reports of injuries and the cause is currently under investigation, he added.

Fire crews have 176th Street between 8th and 16th avenues closed.
