The recovery of a stolen vehicle that ended up in the Fraser River earlier this month has ended with a few more questions than answers.
The Coquitlam RCMP says after a vehicle drove into the river near Maquabeak Park just after midnight on April 6, their investigation efforts found three more vehicles at the bottom of the river.
“RCMP divers from the Underwater Recovery Team located a stolen 2004 Mazda submerged in the Fraser River near three other submerged vehicles, including a school bus,” said Corp. Alexa Hodgins. “The other vehicles appear to have been at this location for some time. Police have recovered and examined a 2010 stolen black 2000 Honda Civic from this location.”
Mounties say due to environmental concerns, the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy is now working to recover the vehicles.
The Canadian Coast Guard has also been called in, and its divers will search and assess the stolen vehicles.
Hodgins explains that if any of the vehicles end up being linked to a criminal investigation, the Mounties will resume conduct of the investigation.
The RCMP is now urging anyone with information about the sunken vehicles to contact the Coquitlam RCMP at 604-945-1550 and quote file number 2024-8540.
