Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for Metro Vancouver, Fraser Valley, Howe Sound, and the Sunshine Coast.
A storm system is set to bring heavy rain and strong winds to the South Coast starting Sunday, the alert says.
“Rain will begin Sunday afternoon and will intensify Sunday evening before easing on Monday afternoon. Rainfall amounts of 30 to 40 mm are expected by Monday morning with locally higher amounts possible,” the weather service said.
“This storm system will also bring strong southeasterly winds on Sunday night.”
Environment Canada says residents should clear storm drains of leaves and debris and watch for possible washouts near rivers, creeks, and culverts.
This special weather statement comes a day after the BC River Forecast Centre issued a high streamflow advisory for Metro Vancouver and parts of Vancouver Island for the weekend. The advisory warned of a storm starting Friday and lasting for several days. High streamflow advisories are issued when river levels are rising or expected to rise rapidly but no major flooding is anticipated.
Surrey and Vancouver increase shelter spaces in advance of the storm
People who need shelter from the foul weather in Surrey can head to the Surrey Alliance Church or the South Surrey Recreation and Arts Centre.
In Vancouver, six spaces are now open: the Directions Youth Services Centre, Aboriginal Front Door, the Salvation Army Belkin House, the Commercial Hastings Extreme Weather Response shelter, the Kiwassa Neighbourhood House, and the Overdose Prevention Site at Hastings and Main.
All spaces are open Saturday and will be open until Monday overnight into Tuesday.
