Public feedback on Metrotown downtown master plan opens

You’re getting a chance to weigh in on a plan to radically transform Metropolis at Metrotown into a new downtown core for Burnaby.

The latest vision for the neighbourhood is available for public feedback, and it includes a forest of new towers over 35 acres.

A virtual mock-up shows more than a dozen new residential towers, with the developer envisioning new pedestrian-friendly streetscapes, shops, greenspaces, an entertainment district, and amenities that would transform Metropolis at Metrotown into what’s being called “a vibrant, mixed-use, walkable downtown core” in the coming decades.

“The plan is designed to strengthen and support a diverse retail mix within a renewed, indoor and outdoor shopping experience for everyone. It also will create a new and vibrant neighbourhood with the addition of residential uses (both for rent and for sale); opportunities for street retail; open space and public parks throughout the site; and new civic, entertainment and cultural features,” the online presentation explained.

“Mobility, pedestrian-focused transportation, and sustainability and livability are also priorities for the development.”

In 2019, Ivanhoe Cambridge first released a vision of a new Metrotown regional town centre, in line with Burnaby’s 2017 downtown plan.

This latest master plan further maps out that vision, which now includes keeping more of the existing mall for another 30 years.

“The last phases of the redevelopment will take place after 2054 in parallel with the expiry of the leases of the significant anchor tenants.”

You are being encouraged to leave feedback through the developer’s engagement website up until April 22.
