The province has announced more affordable housing is set to be built in South Surrey.
Ground has already broken on the 91-unit “Harmony Apartments,” at 15145 20 Avenue in Surrey, where 50 per cent of the units will be rented below market rates and rent will be geared towards income.
“Harmony Apartments will provide affordable housing for seniors, families, and adults living with disabilities so they can stay in the community they call home,” said Jinny Sims, the MLA for Surrey-Panorama. “These 91 new homes will create a community within the broader South Surrey community where seniors, adults living with disabilities, and families can thrive.”
Surrey Mayor Brenda Locke says it’s welcome news for her fast-growing city.
“This was a first for our city, and is a testament to our commitment to prioritizing affordable and inclusive housing. Together, we’re paving the way for a more vibrant and equitable community where every individual has a secure and welcoming place to call home,” said Locke.
She said there were over 6,000 people who expressed their support for the project.
The new building will reportedly offer 18 studios, 42 one-bedroom, 24 two-bedroom, and seven three-bedroom homes, and will also feature a large multipurpose amenity space.
The province says it’s providing approximately $14.4 million and will continue to provide approximately $870,000 in annual operating subsidies.
The City of Surrey is reportedly providing a contribution of approximately $2.2 million to the project, and Peninsula Estates Housing Society is providing the land for the project, valued at $1.6 million. Peninsula Estates Housing Society will also be responsible for the building’s mortgage.
The province says the apartments are anticipated to open in late 2026.
