Police watchdog called in after woman dies following being shot by officer

The Independent Investigations office of BC (IIO BC) has been called in following an incident where one woman died after being shot by a police officer.

The Surrey RCMP says it responded to reports of a disturbance at a home shortly after 4:30 a.m. Thursday. When officers arrived, they found a woman had barricaded herself in a room with a young child while reportedly holding a weapon.

Two other adults were in the room but were “safely removed.”

About an hour after they got there, an officer fired a weapon, striking the woman.

“Officers and Emergency Health Services, who were already outside of the residence, immediately provided medical assistance, but the woman died at the scene,” the BC RCMP said.

“There were no reported injuries to the child.”

Mounties then notified the IIO BC, which has now taken over the investigation.
