Police investigating crashed semi that blocked HWY 17 for hours

Police in Delta are investigating after a crash involving a tractor-trailer blocked Highway 17 for nearly eight hours on Monday afternoon.

Callers to 1130 NewsRadio first reported the incident around 3:20 p.m., with the crash not clearing until 11 p.m.

The Delta Police Department (DPD) says the semi-truck drove through a concrete centre barrier, through two lanes of on-coming traffic, and another concrete barrier on the shoulder of the road. Now, investigators are working to determine if another vehicle was involved in the crash.

“If you witnessed any pre-collision driving behaviour associated to this truck or other traffic around the truck, if you witnessed the collision itself, or if you have video, our collision investigators would like to speak with you,” said Insp. James Sandberg Thursday.

The DPD says it’s specifically looking for any evidence of interaction between the semi and another vehicle moving in the same direction.

The truck is described as a maroon 2006 Volvo tractor with a black and white checkered flag decal on its side, pulling a tridem container chassis with a near-white container, with ‘ONE’ decals on the sides. The truck reportedly entered Highway 17 eastbound from Deltaport Way and remained on the highway until the collision.

Collision witnesses or anyone with dashcam video are asked to call the DPD at 604-946-4411 and quote file number 2024-23160.
