Police identify victim killed in Langley double shooting

Homicide investigators are identifying the victim killed in a shooting in Langley over the weekend as a 38-year-old man from Alberta.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) was called after a shooting in Langley left one man dead and another injured, the RCMP said late Saturday.

Mounties responded to shots fired in the area of 196 Street and 84 Avenue at around 6:30 p.m. First responders found two men suffering from gunshot wounds when they arrived, police say.

One of the victims died at the scene, police say. The other is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries and is expected to survive.

In an update released Sunday afternoon, the RCMP said the deceased victim has been identified, but his name was being withheld until his family could be notified.

In another update Monday, IHIT said “in order to further advance the investigation,” it’s releasing the name of the victim to the public.

Police say 38-year-old Johnathan Hebrada-Walters of Edmonton, Alta. was “known to police,” and initial findings suggest that the shooting was targeted and linked to gang conflict.

“The surviving victim, whose name is not being released, was also known to police,” IHIT said Monday.

Investigators are asking anyone with CCTV or dashcam footage in the area between 3:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 21 to contact IHIT by calling 1-877-551-IHIT (4448) or by email at ihitinfo@rcmp-grc.gc.ca.
