Playland officially opens for 2024 season this weekend

It’s a sure sign of summer to come: Playland will open its gates to amusement park goers starting May 18 for the 2024 season.

The park will be open on select days in May and June between 11 a.m. and 5 p.m. Additionally, the park will be open on certain Saturday evenings in June.

In July and August, Playland will be open Wednesday to Sunday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., as well as open until 10 p.m. on select Fridays and Saturdays.

Tickets for opening weekend are going for $33 for kids and family rides and $45 for thrill rides.

Playland’s summer season will run from May 18 until Aug. 16.

This year brings some new attractions to the amusement park, including the ThunderVolt. While organizers have yet to say when exactly Playland’s newest ride will be ready, they note it is “on track” to open this summer, sometime in July.

According to the PNE, the fully electric ThunderVolt will be 380 metres long, with a maximum height of 18 metres. The 8.2-metre trains can carry 12 people at a time in three vehicles, with 1.3 Gs of acceleration through an illuminated tunnel.

The PNE Fair, meanwhile, will run from Aug. 17 to Sep. 2.

The ever-popular Fright Nights will be on from Oct. 4 to 31, while the PNE’s Winter Fair will run on select dates in December, with more details to come.

The PNE is owned by the City of Vancouver and is a non-profit organization that welcomes more than three million visitors each year, organizers say.
