The Chilliwack Fire Department says one person was found dead following an apartment fire Thursday morning.
Just after 9 a.m., crews responded to reports of smoke coming from the third floor of an apartment building on Victoria Avenue.
“Upon arrival, fire alarms were sounding, but no visible smoke was detected from the exterior. After further investigation, crews confirmed an active fire within the unit, prompting a call for additional resources to support the incident,” a statement from the Chilliwack Fire Department said.
It says crews worked to contain the fire while BC Emergency Health Services and RCMP provided support.
The department said, “Tragically fire crews discovered a deceased individual at the scene.”
The building reportedly sustained minimal damage which allowed residents to return to their homes.
The Chilliwack Fire Department says the cause of the fire is currently under investigation by the RCMP.
