Police in New Westminster are warning parents following a trio of disturbing incidents involving children and online sexual images.
The New Westminster Police Department says it opened the three child sexual exploitation investigations in one week.
“Parents need to understand that when children are manipulated into sharing sexual images of themselves it may be very difficult for children to seek help afterward for fear of consequences,” said Sgt. Andrew Leaver.
Police say it’s critical that parents and children have ongoing conversations about online safety. The NWPD recommended the Canadian Centre for Child Protection, a resource with guides for parents, research, and support for caregivers.
If you have information about child sexual exploitation, you can report it on www.cybertip.ca. In New Westminster, the department also encourages filing a police report by calling 604-525-5411.
