Nanaimo dad, 4 children hit with bear spray over parking spot: RCMP

A family is recovering after getting bear sprayed in a Nanaimo parking lot Monday, according to police.

The Nanaimo RCMP says it’s investigating a fight that started over a parking spot and resulted in one man firing bear spray and another smashing a car window with a tire iron.

Mounties say a dad and four children ranging from one to six years old were attacked when trying to park a pickup truck, with boat in tow, at a mall.

He was reportedly cut off by a large SUV and both drivers got out of their vehicles to argue.

The SUV driver allegedly took out a can of bear spray and sprayed the dad, his three kids, and baby.

The father then grabbed a tire iron from his vehicle and smashed a window on the SUV, police say.

The other driver drove away and was last seen heading south on Highway 19A.

Mounties say paramedics treated the family at the scene.

If you have any information about the incident or the SUV driver, described as a man in his 60s with grey hair driving a dark-coloured SUV that resembled a Hummer, the Nanaimo RCMP says please contact its non-emergency line at 250-754-2345.
