Missing Langley teen found dead in Surrey, IHIT called in

The homicide team has been called in after a teen who had been reported missing was found dead in Surrey’s Port Kells area Friday morning.

The Surrey RCMP says the death is being considered suspicious, and that the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) will be taking over the case.

Mounties say the body of 17-year-old Wenyan Michael Zhao was found around 5:30 a.m. in the area of 99A Avenue and 119A Street.

“At this stage, based on initial observations and information collected, investigators believe this to be an isolated incident. The person has been identified and family of deceased have been notified,” the Surrey RCMP said Friday afternoon.

No details have been provided about Zhao’s death but police say the teen was reported missing by his family in Langley Thursday night. He was last reported to have been seen in the area of 206 Street and Duncan Way in Langley.

IHIT is now looking to speak with anyone who may know where Zhao was between 9 p.m. on July 18 until he was found dead.

The homicide team can be reached at 1-877-551-IHIT (4448) or ihitinfo@rcmp-grc.gc.ca.
