Rise and grind — Metro Vancouver says the notoriously challenging Grouse Grind Trail has reopened Friday morning after closing for repairs in early October.
Starting Monday, Oct. 7, crews started working on multiple sections of the trail to repair and replace steps, stairs, and retaining walls to increase resilience.
In an update Thursday, the district announced that the trail in Grouse Mountain Regional Park is once again open to hikers Friday.
“Be prepared for cool temperatures and carry an extra layer,” said Metro Vancouver. “As always, remember the essentials: water, headlamp, good footwear, cellphone.”
The BCMC Route and the Baden-Powell Trail remained open during the work period. Metro Vancouver says the BCMC is similar to the Grouse Grind in length and elevation — but even more rugged.
“For anyone choosing to hike the BCMC Route, it’s strongly recommended they wear hiking shoes with good ankle support, carry lots of water and a snack, and bring an extra layer of clothing for warmth.”
Previous upgrades completed on the Grind in April included a new trailhead entrance, replacement of a footbridge, new seating, a water fountain, stretching bars, and changes that allow better access for first responders.
Though the district managed to complete the latest work before the long weekend, the trail was originally scheduled to reopen Monday.
