Metro Vancouver gas prices inch up, could be affected by upcoming hurricane season

The average price of a litre of regular gasoline has inched up in Metro Vancouver this week.

Head of petroleum analysis at GasBuddy.com Patrick DeHaan explains regular gas was averaging at 179.64 cents per litre in the region on Sunday, up 3.2 cents compared to the week prior.

The national average, however, was more than 10 cents cheaper, coming in at 163.57 c/L, up by 2.8 cents.

“The national average price of gasoline has nudged higher over the last week as oil prices have continued to push toward multi-month highs. While it looks like this recent rise could be restrained for now, Hurricane Beryl is a stark reminder that hurricane season could play a role in prices in the weeks ahead,” said De Haan.

“For now, we’ll likely continue to see some fluctuations in either direction with the national average moving up, but as we approach August and the peak of hurricane season, there remains a risk that the national average could surge temporarily if we see a major storm in the wrong place.”

DeHaan explains prices across Metro Vancouver were 12.7 c/L cheaper than they were at the same time last year.

“According to GasBuddy historical data, gasoline prices on July 8 in Vancouver have ranged widely over the last five years: 192.33 c/L in 2023, 208.71 c/L in 2022, 170.24 c/L in 2021, 130.03 c/L in 2020 and 146.29 c/L in 2019,” DeHaan shared.

The average price per lite of regular gas in Abbotsford on Sunday was 172.39 c/L, with Victoria seeing an average of 181.58 c/L. The province had an average price of 175.28 c/L.
