Malahat crash leaves 3 adults, 2 children hurt

Mounties on Vancouver Island say a two-vehicle, head-on crash on the Malahat sent several people, including two children, to hospital Saturday.

The Shawnigan Lake RCMP received reports of the crash along Highway 1 near the Malahat summit just after 5:30 p.m.

Police say they’ve determined a grey Acura MDX was heading south when it crossed the centre line into oncoming traffic. The Acura crashed with a grey Honda Civic head-on, Mounties explain.

Officers arrived to find witnesses providing first aid to the female driver of the Honda, who was described as being “in and out of consciousness.”

“She was transported to hospital in serious condition. There were also two young children in the rear of this vehicle, both of whom were transferred to hospital with unknown injuries,” the RCMP said in a release Sunday.

The driver and passenger of the Acura both suffered minor physical injuries, the RCMP says, adding impairment does not appear to have been a factor in this crash.

Police have not said what caused the Acura to veer into oncoming traffic.

The crash resulted in the closure of the northbound lanes of the Malahat for several hours. The lanes reopened just after 9 p.m.

The RCMP is asking anyone who may have seen the crash or the “events leading up to” it to contact investigators at 250-743-5514.
