Lower Mainland travellers should plan for extra time at the borders and on ferries over the long weekend

The May long weekend has officially kicked off, and travellers are heading to border and the ferry terminals.

For anyone planning to drive to the U.S. this weekend, the Peace Arch and Pacific Highway border crossings were seeing hours-long waits Friday afternoon. Most of the backup was cleared by early Friday evening, but this could change at any time over the weekend.

Heavy lines are expected at all border crossings returning to Canada Monday.

As for BC Ferries, communications adviser Reet Sidhu says this is one of their busiest weekends for travel from Metro Vancouver to the Island and the Sunshine Coast.

“To meet demands, we’ve increased sailings on some of our busiest routes,” Sidhu said.

“We’re offering 350 More sailings, and we’ve actually added an early morning route from Vancouver to Swartz Bay.”
