Lower Mainland construction material union issues 72-hour strike notice

It’s the material that keeps our construction industry going, but a strike that would affect the Lower Mainland’s supply of concrete is looming.

The union behind a significant strike that impacted the Lower Mainland’s construction industry two years ago, issued a 72-hour strike notice Tuesday.

Teamsters Local 213, whose members work at Heidelberg Materials, says the key issues include pay, job security, and ensuring what the union calls “stable retirement” for members. The union is accusing the company of “corporate greed.”

There were mediated negotiations between the two sides last month after the union threatened job action, but that has not resulted in a deal.

The union says its demands are fundamental rights for its members.

“@HD_Materials just reported their most profitable year ever [see Footnote 1], and yet they refuse to take care of the workers that made them those record profits,” the union’s post on social media claimed.

Heidelberg Materials is said to provide roughly one-third of the region’s concrete supply and the last strike against it went for five weeks.
