Lineups at U.S. borders seeing waits of several hours on long weekend

Anyone planning to head south to the U.S. may want to change their plans this long weekend, with some border lines seeing waits of several hours.

As of Saturday morning, the Peace Arch crossing was seeing the longest delays, with waits in excess of three hours. Sumas was close to 90 minutes.

Officer Hood from US Customs and Border Protection told 1130 NewsRadio around 11:30 a.m. there were five lanes open.

He says they’re trying to open more lanes at Peace Arch later today but that’s not guaranteed.

“There’s five lanes open at the Peace Arch and two [at] Nexus,” Hood said.

“All the lanes are open at the [Pacific Highway crossing]. There’s five and one [at] Nexus. There’s currently no wait in the Nexus line.”

Nexus lines are only seeing waits of five to 10 minutes, but in some border lines, pass holders need to wait to get past the regular lines to be able to get to the designated lanes.

“If you have Nexus, you have to get up there first,” he said.

Hood suggested it may be better to make alternate plans Saturday.

“I’d probably just stay in Canada and enjoy my day,” he said.

One alternative could be to head to Vancouver Island, as ferry wait times are at normal levels.
