Lightning sparks more than a dozen new wildfires in Sea-to-Sky region this week

A total of 13 new wildfires were sparked by lightning this week in the Sea-to-Sky region, the BC Wildfire Service says.

Three of the blazes are being held and two have been extinguished, the service says.

Of the remaining fires, some are located in areas that are difficult to deal with.

“Many of these fires are in steep, challenging terrain, and crew safety is our top priority,” the service said on social media.

The agency says there is also a risk of thunderstorms and dry lightning over the Coast Mountains and the Rockies.

“With continued hot and dry conditions in the forecast, additional fires may be discovered, and new starts are likely,” the service said.

“We urge the public to continue following fire prohibitions and be extremely cautious when recreating.”

A total of just over 350 wildfires are active across B.C., with 130 of those classified as out of control.
