Investigation launched after false firearm report at Delta high school

Police have launched a public mischief investigation after a false report was made about a person with a firearm at Burnsview Secondary School Thursday.

The Delta Police Department (DPD) says when they received a call from the school just before noon, they advised the school administration to lock down the school and put it on a “hold and secure” protocol.

“DPD officers arrived swiftly to assess the situation and ensure the safety of students and staff,” police said in a news release.

“Delta Officers determined that the report was false and there was no threat.”

This incident has been classified as a “swatting call,” which involves a “false report of a critical incident to elicit an urgent and substantial police response.”

“Filing a false report is a criminal offence under the Criminal Code, classified as mischief,” police said.

“Today’s swatting incident posed no real threat to public safety.”
