IIO seeking witnesses for police interaction that injured Surrey man during his arrest

Investigators are asking witnesses to come forward about an incident of a man suffering an injury while being arrested by police in Surrey earlier this summer.

In a release Wednesday, the Independent Investigations Office (IIO) of BC says on May 23 around 12:30 a.m. the Surrey Police Service (SPS), Surrey RCMP and the Delta Police Department (DPD) were involved in a traffic stop following a reported violation near the intersection of 144 St. and 82A Ave.

“Officers subsequently moved to arrest the man driving the vehicle. There was an interaction, and the man was arrested, suffering an injury in the process,” investigators said.

The man proceeded to self-report the incident to the IIO four days after the event.

“The IIO commenced an investigation immediately, and is seeking to confirm the details of the interaction with police, as well as whether any force used was necessary, proportionate, and reasonable under the circumstances,” it said.

The IIO asks anyone who saw the man’s arrest and the interaction with police or witnessed the traffic stop to call the IIO. You can call the Witness Line toll-free at 1-855-446-8477 or fill out the contact form on the iiobc.ca website.
