IIO called in after off-duty CFSEU member hits pedestrian in New West

B.C.’s police oversight agency has been called in after a crash involving an off-duty gang enforcement unit member and a pedestrian left a woman with serious injuries.

The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) says the crash happened in the area of East Columbia and Braid streets on July 1 around 6:45 p.m.

According to police, an off-duty member of the Combined Forces Special Enforcement Unit had been driving a black Nissan Armada when they hit a female pedestrian.

The pedestrian was taken to the hospital.

The IIO explains it was notified of the crash by New Westminster police on Sunday, July 7, “when NWPD officers became aware that the woman’s injuries may meet the threshold for serious harm, as defined by the Police Act.”

“Initial investigative steps will seek to confirm the details of the collision and the injured woman’s condition,” the IIO said.

Investigators are asking anyone with information about the collision or who may have video of the incident to contact the IIO’s Witness Line at 1-855-446-8477.
