While Christmas this year may not be white with snow, Environment and Climate Change Canada says those in Metro Vancouver should be prepared for a winter storm to hit.
The weather service issued a Special Weather Statement Monday morning for Metro Vancouver, as a series of storms are set to hit B.C.’s South Coast and Vancouver Island.
“A low-pressure centre off the coast of BC will bring strong winds beginning this afternoon. These winds will intensify through the evening and impact western and northern Vancouver Island,” ECCC said.
“Late in the evening the winds will increase through the Strait of Georgia and the Strait of Juan de Fuca and impact East Vancouver Island including Victoria and areas near the water of Metro Vancouver. Wind warnings have been issued for regions where severe impacts may occur,” it continued.
On Wednesday, Christmas Day, ECCC says another powerful frontal system will arrive on the South Coast early in the morning.
“Very strong winds and heavy rain are expected to last until late in the evening,” it explained. “A weaker low-pressure system will approach Vancouver Island late on Thursday and spread strong winds across Vancouver Island and the south coast overnight.”
ECCC is warning that some areas of Vancouver Island may experience flooding due to storm surges.
“Weather warnings will be issued if necessary as confidence in the storm tracks and impacts grows,” it added.
