Fundraiser started to support Surrey crash victim’s family

A fundraiser has been launched to help support the family of a 19-year-old international student from India, who died in a single-vehicle crash in Surrey last week.

Organizers of the GoFundMe say the young woman, identified only as Saniya, had arrived in Canada just two days before her death on Highway 99 Thursday.

“Police arrived at [the] scene to find a woman in her early 20’s who had been ejected from the vehicle and was deceased,” Sgt. James Mason said in a statement.

“Two other occupants were located trapped in the vehicle and later taken to hospital for further assessment. [The] driver of the vehicle is a 23-year-old man and passenger is a 22-year-old man,” he added.

Saniya’s family members say they are now faced with the “heart-wrenching” task of sending her body back to India so she can “rest in peace among her loved ones,” but they’re asking for help to do it.

“The costs associated with this are overwhelming, and our family has already exhausted our savings to send her to Canada,” the GoFundMe page reads.

As of Tuesday afternoon, $3,740 of the $16,000 goal had been raised in 21 hours.

“Please keep Saniya and our family in your thoughts and prayers during this incredibly difficult time,” the family said. “Your generosity and kindness mean the world to us.”
