Fire damages vacant home in Vancouver

A fire in Vancouver left a vacant house and two neighbouring homes with some damage Monday morning.

Vancouver Fire Rescue Services says crews arrived to the area of east 27th Avenue and Slocan Street around 9:30 a.m. to find a home “heavily involved.”

“On arrival, we had heavy fire coming out of the basement windows rapidly extending up into the roof area. Crews got water on the fire quickly,” explained Capt. Matthew Trudeau.

“We got it under control, minimizing the damage to the structure involved and preventing damage to the adjacent houses and structures. Just some minor damage on each one of the structures beside [the house].”

Trudeau says the fire started in a house that was “vacant and under active demolition.”

No injuries have been reported.

“We’re working with the fire investigator right now for cause and origin. They’ll be speaking with the crew that was on-site for more information,” said Trudeau.

He adds crews did a great job in minimizing damage to neighbouring homes. There were over a dozen apparatus at the scene for this fire.

“The unique part was it was under active demolition. So what makes this different, is the widows were all open. So where a house is normally all sealed up and closed or locked or if someone’s gone for the day or at night, here we had ventillation, we do have a breeze today actively fuelling that fire from multiple openings. So that probably aided to the heavy fire conditions on arrival,” he said.
