Deer wanders street in Central Lonsdale, North Vancouver

A deer was spotted trotting down 13th Street in North Vancouver’s Central Lonsdale area Tuesday afternoon.

In a post to social media, resident Nick Martin said, “Deer on the road at 13th and Lonsdale. My dog and I walked passed this lil guy down in Moodyville over the weekend. Seems like he’s gotten lost in the city.”

In the video, a young deer can be seen walking down the sidewalk towards Lonsdale Ave around 1:30 p.m.

A voice in the video yells out, “Somebody call 911,” but the North Vancouver RCMP confirmed that it had not been called to respond to the sighting.

“I’ll admit ‘a bit lost’ is a bit of an understatement,” said Martin in a statement to CityNews.

“I’ve lived in North Van my whole life and have never seen a deer walking at 13th and Lonsdale. You’ll see them out near Deep Cove from time to time, but I’ve never seen one anywhere near Central Lonsdale before. I’d guess it wandered along the Spirit Trail and tried to head back up the hill and found it’s way there, but who knows.”

The BC Conservation Officer Service (COS) said it also didn’t receive reports of the deer on the high street, but encouraged people not to engage with wildlife in urban areas.

“At this time of year, deer and ungulates are often with their young and are more likely to become aggressive. The COS encourages people to take precautions in case of wildlife encounters, including leashing pets, travelling in groups and keeping your distance.”
