Delta police say charges have been laid in connection with a traffic incident that saw an officer suffer injuries earlier this month.
According to police, officers received reports of an impaired driver in the area of Highway 17 and 80th Street around 6:30 p.m. Aug. 22.
The DPD says the driver initially didn’t stop for police, but when they did a short distance later, they “got out of the car and charged at the officer.”
“A conducted energy weapon failed to stop the man’s alleged assault. A second officer arrived on scene to assist, and while taking the male into custody, received injuries as a result of punches to his face and throat,” police said in a release Wednesday.
Police say a 32-year-old Surrey man has since been charged with assaulting a police officer, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, and flight from police. They add the man continues to be investigated for impaired driving.
He has since been released following a court appearance.
