A serious crash trapped approximately 100 cars parked on Burnaby Mountain Park for several hours Tuesday night.
The Burnaby RCMP says the crash, between a motorcycle and a sedan, was serious enough to close down Centennial Way for about 4 hours until 1:45 a.m. Wednesday.
“Unfortunately, when we have an incident like this, we need to make sure that we don’t lose any evidence. Potentially not knowing how bad the injuries were for the victim, we had to shut the road down. So some civilians, some people, were actually driven down by officers, and I think there were about 100 cars left up there,” said Cpl. Mike Kalanj.
He tells CityNews that some people were not happy to be made to wait, but he thanked them for their patience during the investigation.
Investigators found a 20-year-old motorcyclist very seriously injured after he crashed into a car that was turning left into a parking lot.
Kalanj says the motorcyclist’s injuries are not life-threatening, and police don’t believe impairment was a factor in the crash.
“However, speed is believed to be a definite factor on the part of the motorcyclist,” he said.
Centennial Way is the only road to the top of Burnaby Mountain Park. Kalanj says that in the event of a major emergency, crews would prioritize helping people around any obstruction.
