Body found in U.S. waters after kayakers reported missing off Vancouver Island

Police in Washington are confirming that the body of one of the kayakers who had gone missing over the weekend off Vancouver Island has been found.

San Juan County Sheriff Eric Peter says late Monday afternoon police received a report of a body floating in the water by Grandma’s Cove on the west side of San Juan Island.

“We did recover one person who was deceased,” Peter told CityNews Tuesday morning.

Peter confirms the body has been turned over to the county’s coroner’s office to formally identify the individual.

“This morning, we received a call about 30 minutes ago, of another body in the water near the south end of Lopez Island,” he added.

Daniel MacAlpine and Nicolas West were travelling on a tandem kayak between Island View Beach and D’Arcy Island on Saturday when they disappeared.

The kayak the men were paddling in was found on Sunday off the coast of Henry Island.

The men were last known to be kayaking between D’arcy Island and Island View Beach in Central Saanich on Saturday around 2 p.m, the North Saanich RCMP said over the weekend.
