BC SPCA raises funds for puppy found with rocks in her stomach

More than $4,000 has been raised for Pebbles, a puppy who arrived at the BC SPCA with rocks in her stomach.

According to the animal protection society, Pebbles arrived at the vet “cold and motionless.”

It’s unclear what circumstances the dog was in before she was brought in, but the society said it appears Pebbles was forced to eat rocks for sustenance.

“Being the runt of her littler, poor Pebbles constantly lost the battle for her share of food, leading to malnourishment. Desperate for sustenance, Pebbles must have resorted to eating anything she could find, including rocks,” the society said in a release.

Pebbles, a four-month-old puppy, was brought into the BC SPCA's care with rocks in her stomach, due to a case of malnourishment as the runt of her litter.

It said Pebbles was kept in the ICU for several days. Eventually, X-rays showed the rocks inside the dog’s stomach were moving through her digestive tract naturally and the four-month-old puppy was able to be moved into a foster home.

In her temporary home, Pebbles is receiving regular small meals to help move things along and re-invigorate the malnourished pup.

“Despite her illness, Pebbles is full of confidence. The hungry girl barks with joyful excitement at mealtime, wagging her tail furiously,” the society stated.

While Pebbles has been given her vaccines, dewormer and parasite treatments, she’s yet to receive other necessary operations like a spay surgery.

The funds being raised by the BC SPCA are now going towards emergency vet care, x-rays, IV fluids, medications, a spay surgery and daily care for Pebbles while she regains her strength at her foster home.

Anyone who donates to Pebble’s cause is being provided personal updates on her care in return.

If Pebble’s medical bills don’t require all the funds raised in her name, the society said additional funds will go towards the care of other animals.
