BC gov’t renews job-training grant program

The B.C. government announced Wednesday its renewal of a system of grants used for short-term skills training.

The province says people training for “good-paying, in-demand” careers will once again be able to access grants for their tuition with the next intake of the ‘StrongerBC future skills grant.’

Premier David Eby says his government launched the program last year, and 7,000 students participated.

Speaking outside Douglas College Wednesday, he announced that the program will restart, with $480 million in funding that will allow for grants of $3,500 per person.

“In order to facilitate zero-charge micro credential courses for people to be able to upgrade their skills, to take those jobs that are out there, that require that additional training, that additional capacity. It’s already a program that has helped people in the healthcare field, trades and construction, education, cybersecurity, wildfire-fighting: some of the most in demand areas in the province of British Columbia,” said Eby.

He says the fall intake for courses is open as of Wednesday. Hopeful learners can asses their eligibility and register for programs on the WorkBC website.
