Barge quickly contained after going adrift in English Bay: CCG

A barge that came loose in Vancouver’s English Bay Tuesday afternoon was quickly contained, according to officials.

The Canadian Coast Guard says reports of a barge adrift in the area came in around 2:30 p.m.

“Two crews from our Kitsilano Base were on-scene within minutes to tie onto the barge to hold it in position, and off of the beach, while they awaited commercial tugs,” the coast guard said in an email.

The commercial barge was 200 feet long, with the Coast Guard reporting no damage or pollution as a result of the incident.

“A vessel from the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority (VFPA) also arrived on-scene to assist Coast Guard with keeping the barge off the beach,” the email reads.

The coast guard says two Seaspan tugs were on-scene just after 3 p.m. to take over.

“They then resecured the barge,” the agency explained, adding, “the incident was over in less than an hour.”

It’s unclear how the barge came loose.
