A 65-year-old Abbotsford man remains missing after he went rowing on the Sumas River Wednesday evening.
The Abbotsford Police Department (AbbyPD) says a search began right away for the man, after he was reported missing around 6:30 p.m. that day.
He was reportedly last seen paddling in the Sumas River along Quadling Road, close to McDonald Park and No. 3 Road.
“We are treating this as a missing person investigation,” said AbbyPD Const. Art Stele.
He said the search so far has included the surrounding parks, the shorelines of the river, and by air with the help of an RCMP helicopter.
Stele said boats have been combing the river by daylight, and the AbbyPD is considering using RCMP dive teams to assist with the search.
Kayakers and rowers are common along the Sumas River, says Stele; disappearances are not.
He said whether or not safety precautions were ignored by the rower remains unknown.
