3 bodies found on Squamish peak where mountaineers went missing

The Sea to Sky RCMP announced Monday the discovery of three bodies in Garibaldi Provincial Park, nearly one month after the disappearance of three mountaineers in the same region.

Mounties say the bodies were recovered in the area of Atwell Peak — the same peak where Squamish Search and Rescue (SSR) crews were searching for three climbers when they did not return as expected on Friday, May 31.

The RCMP has not confirmed the identities of the victims.

“Members of Squamish Search and Rescue worked with the RCMP this morning to recover the bodies of three individuals in the Atwell Peak area. The task has been turned over to the RCMP and the Coroner Service,” said BJ Chute, a manager at SSR.

Police say they will not be releasing any further information as the file “is now with” the BC Coroners Service.

In early June, over a week since they had gone missing, SSR said it had “changed strategies,” facing poor weather, but not stopped in the search for the missing mountaineers.
