3 arrested for attempted home invasion in New Westminster

Police say a third suspect has been arrested after two were stopped near the scene of an attempted home invasion in New Westminster last month.

The New Westminster Police Department (NWPD) says officers responded to a report of a masked person holding a gun, trying to gain entry to a home on 12th Street near 10th Avenue, on July 8.

Sgt. Andrew Leaver tells CityNews that the victim saw the attempt happening from inside their home.

Police say the suspect was unable to gain access and ran from the area.

When officers arrived, they found one suspect with a balaclava, rifle, and ammunition.

“Initial investigation determined that the suspect had arrived at the home by way of a stolen vehicle that was also recovered in the area,” said Leaver.

A second suspect, whom police believe was associated with the incident, was arrested near the vehicle.

When the Major Crime Unit took over the investigation, police say it was determined that a third suspect was involved. Investigators made the third arrest last week on Aug. 15.

Police say charges are being recommended relating to firearms offences, breach of probation, and attempts to break and enter with intent to commit an indictable offence.

Leaver says the incident appears to be a targeted and isolated event, and there’s no evidence of an increased risk to public safety.

Anyone with more information or video footage of the event is asked to call the NWPD at 604-529-2430.
