After over 20 one-day heat records were broken on Sunday, Monday saw even more records fall across B.C. as the mercury stayed elevated thanks to a lingering heatwave.
Monday saw 28 places in B.C. smash their one-day heat record for July 8.
The hottest spot in the province, and across Canada, was Lytton, which recorded a top temperature of 42.6 degrees.
Chache Creek and Lillooet also saw temperatures hit over 40 degrees, with those areas recording temps of 40.7 and 40.9 degrees, respectively.
Blue River, Burns Lake, Castlegar, Campbell River, Cranbrook, Chetwynd, Dawson Creek, Kamloops, Kelowna, Mackenzie, Malahat, Merritt, Nelson, Osoyoos, Princeton, Smithers, Summerland, Tatlayoko, Trail, Terrace, Vernon, Whistler, and Yoho all saw their July 8 records fall.
While no records fell in the Lower Mainland on Monday, CityNews Meteorologist Michael Kuss says the temperatures will soar into the 30s again on Tuesday.
“It could be a degree or two warmer than yesterday. It’s not just the oppressive heat — humidity making it feel closer to 37 or 38 degrees and the air quality deteriorating, slipping into the moderate range due to the local pollutants getting trapped in the atmosphere,” he said.
“Today, records will likely be set around the Lower Mainland with temperatures warmer than yesterday.”
