Whistler’s Marielle Thompson wins ski cross gold in Switzerland

Canadians Marielle Thompson, India Sherret, and Reece Howden raced onto the podium at a World Cup ski cross event in Veysonnaz, Switzerland, on Saturday.

Thompson, of Whistler, B.C., won women’s gold by fending off Germany’s Daniela Maier, who took silver.

Sherret, of Cranbrook, B.C., was the next across the finish line to clinch a bronze-medal result. She was just ahead of teammate Courtney Hoffos, of Windermere, B.C., who finished fourth.

Sherret remains tops on the overall season standings, with 545 points. Thompson is third, with 508 points.

Marielle Thompson of Whistler, B.C., won gold, India Sherret of Cranbrook, B.C. won bronze, and Courtney Hoffos of Windermere, B.C., finished in fourth place in the women’s big final, at the FIS ski cross World Cup event in Veysonnaz, Switzerland.

On the men’s side, Canada’s Howden took bronze in Veysonnaz in a photo finish.

The Cultus Lake, B.C. native just beat Japan’s Ryo Sugai across the finish line and took the final place on the men’s podium.

Italy’s Simone Deromedis won gold, while French skier Youri Duplessis Kergomard took silver.
