Trails closed after bear attacks woman at Squamish, B.C., estuary

Officials say a woman was attacked by a bear while walking her dog at a nature estuary in Squamish, B.C.

The trails have been closed since the attack on Friday, British Columbia’s Conservation Officer Service said in a Facebook post.

Officers said the woman noticed two bear cubs and was “suddenly charged” by a female bear, suffering non-life-threatening injuries in the attack. The bear ran off and wasn’t found in later searches of the area.

The trails at the estuary have been closed, with caution tape and barricades set up to keep people out of the area, the District of Squamish said in a statement.

Conservation officers are investigating the incident and urging hikers to travel in groups and to make sure pets are leashed to avoid similar wildlife encounters.

Squamish is located around 45 kilometres north of Vancouver.
