Highway 99 north of Pemberton reopens after landslide

A large stretch of Highway 99 north of Pemberton, B.C., has reopened following a closure due to a landslide on Tuesday.

The province’s Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure said Tuesday evening that crews have cleared away two mudslides from earlier in the day.

DriveBC, the provincial travel information site, previously said the highway was closed in both directions between Rancheree Road and Seton Lake Road for more than 80 kilometres due to the slide.

No detours were available and a geotechnical investigation was underway to determine the cause of the slides.

It’s unclear how severe the landslide was, but the B.C. Highway Patrol has said there were no injuries when debris washed over the road.

Landslides have happened in the area before, including November 2021 when five people were killed in a slide as a series of atmospheric rivers rolled over southern B.C.
