Surrey RCMP say drug impairment is believed to be a contributing factor in a car crash into a bus stop bench that killed a man and injured another late Saturday afternoon.
RCMP say the driver, a 44-year-old man, was arrested on scene for dangerous and impaired operation of a motor vehicle, causing death.
The driver was treated at the hospital for minor injuries and was released from police custody, according to police.
Police received reports of the collision near the intersection of 144 Street and Hyland Road around 4:30 p.m. PT on Saturday.
A Ford F350 was travelling northbound on 144 Street when it veered into the oncoming lane and collided with a bus stop bench, damaging surrounding property in the process and injuring two pedestrians, police said.
A 33-year-old man died at the scene and a male pedestrian was transported to hospital with minor injuries.
The investigation continues.
