Canada’s Sarah Mitton falls just short in shot put event at Harry Jerome Track Classic

Olympic-bound Canadian shot putter Sarah Mitton fell short of her third straight win on Saturday, losing by 18 centimetres at the Harry Jerome Track Classic in Burnaby, B.C.

The medal contender for the Paris Games this summer was defeated by Jamaica’s Danniel Thomas-Dodd, who launched the ball 19 metres on her second of six attempts at Swangard Stadium.

Thomas-Dodd was narrowly beaten by Mitton on Thursday at the Edmonton Athletics Invitational.

Mitton, a 27-year-old from Brooklyn, N.S., raised her national women’s record on May 11 with a world-leading throw of 20.68 at a meet in Fleetwood, Pa. The world indoor champion has won eight of 13 events this year, surpassing 20 metres four times.

She is ranked second in the world behind two-time defending world champion Chase Jackson of the United States.

All Canadian athletes have through June 30 to qualify for the Paris Olympics. The Canadian track and field Olympic trials kick off June 26.
