B.C.’s world champion hammer throwers book Olympic spots

World champions Ethan Katzberg and Camryn Rogers have their tickets to Paris booked and ready.

Katzberg won the men’s hammer throw, besting the Olympic standard once more, with a championship-record throw of 82.60 metres at the Canadian Olympic trials on Wednesday in Montreal. Rogers did the same in topping the women’s field in the hammer throw at 75.05 metres.

The pair — both the top-ranked hammer throwers in the world — were the only athletes to earn spots for the upcoming Olympics on Wednesday.

Katzberg of Nanaimo, B.C., has enjoyed a strong year after a breakout 2023 season. The 22-year-old opened his campaign with the furthest throw in the world in 16 years at 84.38 metres back in April, and Wednesday was the sixth time in eight competitions he’s thrown over 80 metres.
