1 dead, 1 injured after reported stabbing in Victoria: police

Police in Victoria are investigating after one person was killed in an alleged stabbing and a second was seriously injured.

They say officers were called to the 700-block of Pandora Avenue near Blanshard Street around 4 a.m. PT Sunday for reports of a stabbing and found a man dead.

In a statement the Victoria Police Department said the second victim, whose gender was not specified, was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

The statement said one person was taken into custody and there is no further risk to the public.

It said the case is being investigated by the Vancouver Island Integrated Major Crime Unit and no further details would be released at this time.

Two residents of the Pandora Apartments supportive housing building on the block told CHEK News that they heard an argument near a bus stop on the other side of Pandora.

“There was a lot of squabbling and screaming,” Lawrence Reed said on Sunday afternoon.

The block, which includes a bus stop and parts of the Ocean Island Inn Backpackers suites, was cordoned off by yellow police tape on Sunday afternoon. A pool of blood was visible on the street, and several yellow police evidence markers were placed around the area.

Jessica Haberl says she was supposed to stay at the hostel Sunday night after going to a local concert, but when she returned around 4:30 a.m., she was told by police that no one was allowed in or out of the building.

Haberl told CHEK News that one of her friends let her stay at their house until she was allowed in the hostel to gather her belongings.

“One room on the fourth floor was all cordoned off, and there were a few officers there. That was the most that we could see,” Haberl told CHEK News.
