As of mid Tuesday, all open burning will be prohibited in Mission, as the region deals with higher temperatures and drier conditions.
The City of Mission says the ban applies to recreational fire pits as well, though gas or propane stoves and barbecues, as well as some other fires are still allowed on private property.
“Occasional rain only temporarily reduces the fire hazard a small amount and the hazard quickly rises again, so the burning ban will remain in place regardless of the weather until lifted by the City of Mission,” a notice on the city’s website reads.
No end date has been set for the ban.
The city says anyone found in violation of the restrictions could be subject to a fine.
The Mission ban comes after the BC Wildfire Service announced a campfire ban for the Kamloops Fire Centre starting Friday at noon. That ban will likely last until mid October.
The Wildfire Service puts in prohibitions for larger regions, but municipalities are able to put in their own rules as well.
