Wildfire near Lillooet holding Tuesday after spreading quickly

After doubling in size in a matter of hours, the wildfire burning north of Lillooet hasn’t grown overnight.

BC Wildfire Service fire information officer Cassidy Martin tells CityNews the Tiffen Creek fire remains at about 60 hectares.

“Currently, we have one unit crew for initial attack crews, two response officers, and four pieces of heavy equipment acting [on] the fire as well as four helicopters,” she explained.

The wildfire was first spotted on Monday and is suspected to be human-caused.

“[The fire is] estimated at around 60 hectares, but we’re expecting that to change in the next little bit,” Martin explained, as crews are working to remap the fire in the coming hours.

The Tiffen Creek fire is considered out of control as it burns its way up a steep slope off Highway 99.

This is the 276th wildfire in B.C. so far this season, marking a stark difference from the more than 450 wildfires already burned or burning at this time last year.
