King George SkyTrain Station to reopen after weeks-long closure

There’s good news for SkyTrain riders in Surrey. TransLink says King George Station on the Expo Line will reopen Sunday, June 9, after a weeks-long closure.

The station has been shut since Saturday, April 27. During the closure, there has been no SkyTrain service to or from King George Station, with the Expo Line temporarily ending at Surrey Central Station.

The closure was necessary, TransLink says, so that “important upgrades” could be completed.

That work included the removal of parts of the rail to replace two turnouts, which are described as “mechanical devices that guide trains from one track to another.”

“Over time, these components, over the years, need replacement. And this section of the track, actually, has been in use since the station itself first opened 30 years ago. So, it’s in need of some maintenance and some repair and some upgrades,” TransLink spokesperson Thor Diakow told CityNews in March.

Other upgrades were also completed over the last six weeks, including on the power rail, cables, elevators, escalators, lighting, and electrical.

TransLink says King George Station will reopen at the start of service on Sunday.
