Free outdoor movies in Vancouver this summer and you can watch the classics under the stars

Now that June has arrived you may have started thinking about all the fun things to do in Vancouver this summer.

Metro Vancouver is filled with fun summer activities every year, including free outdoor movie nights that allow you to watch blockbuster films under the stars.

Sitting on a blanket with your besties while watching a movie on a warm evening sounds like the perfect way to spend a summer night this year.

There are several venues around the city where you’ll be able to catch a flick between July and August.

Here are the outdoor movies you can watch in Vancouver this summer.

Summer Movie Nights at the Vancouver Art Gallery

Address: North Plaza of the Vancouver Art Gallery

When: Various dates between July and August

Films that will be shown in 2024: TBA

Summer Movie Nights outside the Vancouver Art Gallery are back this summer. The films will be shown every Thursday from July 4 until August 15, 2024. Activations for the event will begin at 5 p.m. and the movie will begin around 9 p.m., depending on sundown.

The films that will be shown have yet to be announced.

Sunset Cinema at The Shipyards

Address: The Shipyards, 125 Victory Ship Way, North Vancouver

When: Various dates between July and August

Films that will be shown in 2024:

  • July 31: Barbie
  • August 7: The Princess Bride
  • August 14: Top Gun: Maverick
  • August 21: Finding Nemo
  • August 28: Pitch Perfect 1

Sunset Cinema will take place at the Shipyards Common, which is a covered outdoor plaza in the Shipyards District. There will be public washrooms on-site as well as food trucks.

The City of North Vancouver website says all Sunset Cinema nights are subject to air quality and could be cancelled or postponed if there is smoky weather.

Outdoor movies at Civic Plaza

Address: 126 14th St W, North Vancouver

When: Various dates in July

Films that will be shown in 2024:

  • July 12: TBD
  • July 26: TBD

Civic Plaza is located between City Hall and North Vancouver Public Library. Public washrooms will be available at the library until 9 p.m. and there will also be an on-site portable toilet.

There will be a concession stand selling popcorn, chips and drinks for $1 by the Library Teen Advisory Council. All the money raised will support the teen programs at the library.

Reel Magic at Ray Perrault Park

Address: Ray Perrault Park, 15th Street East and Grand Boulevard, North Vancouver

When: August 9

Films that will be shown in 2024:

  • August 9: TBD

There will be a 24-foot screen for the outdoor movie night at Ray Perrault Park. Attendees can also take part in Jumbo games that will be at the park starting at 6 p.m.

The Polygon Gallery will also be hosting Deckchair Cinema movie nights this summer on Cates Deck in front of the gallery. The films will be shown over 10 Thursdays beginning June 27.

The first event will be held on June 27 for the viewing of Ladies and Gentlemen, The Fabulous Stains. Admission to these movie nights is by donation.
