Serial Richmond arsonist pleads guilty after 10-month investigation

The Richmond RCMP says a serial arsonist has pleaded guilty to multiple offences after a 10-month-long investigation into at least 22 fires in 2020.

Mounties say between January and August 2020, the arsons mostly targeted bushes, hedges, and garbage cans in residential areas.

The RCMP says that due to the “serial nature” of the fires, it set up a task force to find the suspect, and began its almost year-long investigation.

In July 2021, police arrested Megan Wells in relation to the offences, and on May 6 of this year, Wells pleaded guilty to multiple counts of Arson Causing Damage to Property.

“These arsons garnered significant attention and concern within our community partially due to heightened awareness and concerns around wildfires in the Province. Fortunately, each of the fires was extinguished quickly; however, the potential risk posed to our community was significant,” said Chief Supt. Dave Chauhan.

The Richmond RCMP says anyone with information about “suspicious activities” to call police immediately.
