Vancouver driver arrested after crashing into vehicles, narrowly missing pedestrians

A man has been arrested after a driver smashed into several vehicles and nearly hit multiple pedestrians in downtown Vancouver last week, the VPD says.

Police say the driver of a white Mercedes allegedly “smashed into and sideswiped” a grey Mazda CX5 on Alberni Street around 10 p.m. on Friday.

The VPD alleges he then accelerated through the Bute Street intersection, jumping a curb and nearly hitting pedestrians before crashing into a bike rack and street sign and splitting a tree in half.

Three other vehicles were hit before the Mercedes came to a rest on a sidewalk, police add, noting bystanders reported seeing the man get out of the vehicle and then run east on Alberni.

The driver was eventually found. The VPD says it will be recommending multiple dangerous driving and impaired driving charges, though they did not specify how many.
